Iran’s Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Sentenced to Six More Years in Prison
Voice of People, London 8 February:
An Iranian court has handed prominent human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi a fresh six‑year prison sentence, her lawyer confirmed on Sunday.
According to the verdict, Mohammadi was convicted on charges of “assembly and collusion with the intent to commit a crime.” The ruling also imposes a two‑year travel ban.
Her lawyer further stated that she received an additional 18‑month sentence for allegedly spreading “anti‑state propaganda.” The court also ordered her two‑year exile to the eastern city of Khusf in South Khorasan province.
Mohammadi, 53, has long been a leading critic of Iran’s use of the death penalty and the country’s mandatory dress code for women. Her activism has resulted in repeated arrests over the past 25 years, and she has spent most of the last decade behind bars. She has not seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.
In 2023, Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering commitment to human rights in Iran.
