“Voting for Jamaat Is Forbidden for All Muslims”: Hefazat-e-Islam Chief Muhibbullah Babunagari
Voice of People, Dhaka Correspondent, 8 February:
Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh’s Amir, Allama Shah Muhibbullah Babunagari, has declared that voting for Jamaat-e-Islami is “haram” (religiously forbidden) for all Muslims. He made the statement while announcing his support for BNP’s Paddy Sheaf candidate, Sarwar Alamgir, in the Chattogram‑2 constituency ahead of the 13th national election.
Speaking on Thursday night at the concluding session of Sahih Bukhari Sharif at Kazirhat Madrasa in Fatikchhari, he said,
“To me, this is not an election—this is a jihad against Jamaat. For all Muslims, voting for Jamaat is haram. It is not permissible in any way.”
Babunagari also criticised political groups aligned with Jamaat, saying,
“Those who have formed alliances with Maududi’s Jamaat are themselves followers of the same ideology. We have fundamental theological and ideological differences with Jamaat. They do not present the correct interpretation of religion.”
He urged the public to unite to prevent what he described as the rise of a “false and misguided force.”
Local scholars, political leaders, and BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir were present at the event.
Political observers say Babunagari’s open endorsement of the BNP candidate and his strong anti‑Jamaat stance have added a new dimension to the electoral dynamics in Fatikchhari.
