Special Editorial ।। Ramadan: A Call for Self-Purification and Moral Renewal
From 18 February in Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, and from 19 February across many parts of the world, the holy month of Ramadan has begun. On this blessed occasion of restraint, mercy, and salvation, Voice of People extends heartfelt greetings to all its readers—Ramadan Mubarak.
Ramadan is not merely a month on the calendar; it is a time for an انقلاب of the soul. It is the month when one feels the pain of hunger and learns to understand the silent suffering of the poor. It teaches that restraint is not weakness, but strength of character.
At a time when the world is burdened by consumerism, ruthless competition, and moral decline, Ramadan confronts us with a fundamental question: Are we truly walking the path of self-purification, or are we confined to rituals alone?
The Mirror of Self-Accountability
Ramadan is a mirror of self-examination. It is an opportunity to turn away from a year’s negligence, injustice, dishonesty, greed, and moral lapses. A believer abstains not only from food and drink, but also from falsehood, unlawful gain, corruption, slander, and hatred.
If fasting does not transform our behavior—if it does not bring honesty to our speech and fairness to our dealings—then it is reduced to mere hunger and thirst.
The Market and the Test of Humanity
Ramadan is a month of mercy. If prices rise unjustly and profiteering thrives during this sacred time, it contradicts the very spirit of the month. Turning a season of restraint into a season of excessive consumption undermines its moral purpose.
Trade is lawful, profit is legitimate—but exploiting the hardship of others is not the teaching of Islam. Ramadan reminds us that making life easier for people is itself an act of worship.
The Light of Worship and Laylat al-Qadr
The nights of Ramadan shine with Taraweeh, Tahajjud, and recitation of the Qur’an. In its final ten nights lies Laylat al-Qadr—the Night of Power—better than a thousand months. It reminds us that one sincere decision, one heartfelt repentance, one honest supplication can transform a person’s destiny.
A Month of Prayer and Responsibility
Ramadan is a month when prayers are accepted. The moment of breaking the fast carries special spiritual weight; a sincere supplication at that time ascends with hope of acceptance. Yet alongside prayer comes responsibility. Establishing justice, integrity, and compassion in our families, our society, and our state is also part of Ramadan’s message.
Ramadan teaches us: reform yourself, and society will reform. Without self-purification, there can be no true change; without restraint, no sustainable progress; without morality, no meaningful prosperity.
Let us embrace Ramadan not merely as a ritual, but as a living consciousness. Let us overcome arrogance, greed, and injustice within ourselves. May the lessons of fasting reflect in our personal lives, our businesses, our institutions, and our politics.
May this sacred month mark the beginning of moral renewal.
May Almighty Allah accept our fasting, prayers, and supplications.
Ramadan Mubarak.
